Biography


Madeleine Tan, a banker-turned-composer who constantly falls in love with music. As a composer, Madeleine is known for her memorable melodies. She is able to think out the box in the use of instrumentation and voicing, creating her unique style for each film. As a team player, Madeleine firmly believes in oneness in vision to bring out the message of the film. 

Madeleine is well versed in both contemporary and orchestral music. In New York, she worked with Second Avenue Dance Company and Young Dancemakers Company, creating musical moments for their dances. In the 23rd Season of Young Dancemakers Company 2018, Madeleine composed “The Rippled Effect”. This is the first year where composers worked one-on-one with YDC student choreographers to create new work. This is performed in around New York, including Ailey Citigroup Theatre in New York City. Locally, Madeleine worked with Frontier Danceland to compose the music for the dance, “Unlock”. This piece is presented in the International Platform for Choreographers 2022, headed by the International Dance Festival, Portugal.

Madeleine has worked with Singapore Repertory Theatre on several of their productions including The Nightingale, LKY - The Musical. In 2018, Madeleine was the Composer and Music Director of their year-end production, “Nursery Crimes”. In 2020, Madeleine composed and produced “I Am Fluent In Silence”, a piece highlight mental health. This piece premiere on Sept 9, in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day. "I Am Fluent In Silence" received Finalist status on the Eurasia International Film Festival 2021.

Madeleine graduated from New York University, with a Master's Degree in Music Theory and Compositions, with a concentration in Scoring for Film and Multimedia. She is the recipient of the Excellence in Graduate Music Composition and Film Music Awards. Currently, she is based in Singapore.

  • Singapore Repertory Theatre’s Junior Claus as an Arranger,
  • Metropolitan Production’s The LKY Musical as an Arranger and Project Manager, The LKY Musical is a musical about Singapore’s late Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew. The musical was awarded Best Production of the Year (Reader’s Choice) by M1-The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards 2016
  • National Council of Social Service - Care and Share Jingle as an Arranger, Post Production Engineer),
  • Jimmy Ye (Concert) as an arranger, copyist and live concert programmer, and etc

When asked about her views on music, Madeleine responded, “ Music is like a story-telling in audio form, without the use of any words. Every character has his/her theme. The theme develops and transforms as the character grow. At this moment, my theme song is "Letters" by Abel Korzeniowski.

Bound

The Match girl

Choreography: Sophy Zhao in collaboration with the dancers

Performers: Sabrina Karlin, Holly Laroche, Amanda Malfavon and Miranda Viars

Loosely based on the script Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Bound is set in a country where government promotes equality by handicapping the talents of individual to achieve peace. Chaos arise when a certain individual removes her handicap and explores her god-given talents. Commissioned by Second Avenue Dance Company to write, "With Equality", for the dance Bound.

While he embarks on a journey back to Earth in hopes of saving our planet, she remains on ICARUS, a new planet created as a splitting image of Earth. Will they overcome the distance between them?
